The MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System will be installed in the Fred J. Woods Radiation Therapy Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
LITTLETON, Mass, November 3, 2023 – Mevion Medical Systems, the leading provider of compact single-room proton therapy systems, is pleased to announce it has been selected by BayCare to equip the St. Joseph’s Hospital Cancer Institute in Tampa with a MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System™*.
BayCare is a leading not-for-profit health care system in West Central Florida with 16 hospitals and one of the region’s largest provider groups, BayCare Medical Group. It is ranked in the top 20% of large health systems nationally by Fortune/Merative for clinical and patient experience, and is dedicated to delivering high-quality, compassionate health services to its community.
The MEVION S250-FIT system will be installed in the Fred J. Woods Radiation Therapy Center at St. Joseph’s Hospital with a targeted opening in the fall of 2025. This implementation is a strategic advancement aimed at optimizing cancer treatment services throughout BayCare, including other accredited radiation oncology programs at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, and Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven.
“Proton therapy is the most technologically advanced form of cancer treatment and is shown to improve outcomes in cancer care. However, it is not yet widely available,” said BayCare President and CEO Stephanie Conners. “BayCare is bringing an advanced proton radiation therapy center to Tampa so patients in our community don’t have to drive to Orlando or beyond to get this level of high-quality care.”
The MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System is thoughtfully designed to expedite proton therapy project timelines with a compact footprint, reduced construction requirements, and accelerated installation process. It represents a more cost-efficient solution, ensuring faster project deployment and broader accessibility to those patients who need it most.
"We are excited to partner with BayCare and offer our cutting-edge proton technology to support their patients in the battle against cancer," said Tina Yu, Ph.D., CEO and President of Mevion Medical Systems. "Time is of the essence when receiving a cancer diagnosis and we are pleased that our solution will expedite access for patients in the Tampa Bay area."
The FIT system features industry-leading HYPERSCAN® Pencil Beam Scanning for Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) with a proton MLC, and upright patient positioning with a large bore diagnostic CT from Leo Cancer Care for IGRT and adaptive therapy. FIT is also designed to support fast access to emerging technologies like ARC therapy, adaptive planning, dual-energy CT (DECT), and FLASH therapy.
"As a proud native and resident of Tampa, I’m deeply honored on a personal level to collaborate with BayCare to bring proton therapy to the members of our communities,” said Curt Kienast, Chief Operating Officer of Mevion Medical Systems. “We are dedicated to advancing proton therapy technology and access, and I look forward to making a meaningful difference to patients and families across West Central Florida.”
*The MEVION S250-FIT Proton Therapy System, FLASH therapy, online adaptive therapy, and ARC therapy are not yet available for clinical use.
